RESUMO

Calls for investment in green infrastructures, which can provide a range of ecosystem services in support of sustainability and resilience, are increasing amidst the climate crisis. The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed for many the important benefits of greenspace to cultural ecosystem services, particularly to individuals' own assessments of their mental and emotional health, or subjective well-being (SWB). This pandemic has also revealed the unevenness of these benefits. In order to better understand the contributions of greenspace to SWB, as well as the distribution of the benefits, during times of shared social-ecological disruption, we investigate perceptions of greenspace and their effect on SWB during the COVID-19 pandemic. We use a mixed methods approach combining data from surveys and interviews conducted with US post-secondary students. Our results indicate that perceiving the outdoors as good for you is related to higher levels of SWB. We also find that both prior experience with nature and current social-environmental circumstances play an important role in shaping this perception. When considered alongside research regarding environmental justice and children's access to nature, these findings suggest a need for both distributional and intergenerational justice in greenspace planning, design, and management, as well as explicit attention to the role of greenspace in coping with future social-ecological disturbance. RESUMO

Quarantine is one of the effective approaches to control the spread of COVID-19. However, prolonged isolation may harm the health of residents, especially students, who are quarantined in dormitories. This study surveyed students' behaviors, living environment, and psychological state through an online questionnaire. The results showed that during the isolation period, the participants' discomfort mainly came from high temperatures, high humidity, loud sounds, and dark lighting. Moreover, about half of the students experienced severe anxiety or depression, with poor sleep and an unclear mind being the most common problems. Additionally, this study focused on exploring the correlations between environmental perceptions and the psychological state of isolated students, that were identified to be significant. Furthermore, as isolation time was prolonged, the psychological state of isolated students worsened, and the most significant factor changed from thermal sensations to acoustic sensations. Interestingly, the psychological state of males was worse than females, and they were more easily affected by their thermal and acoustic environments. Therefore, keeping the environment comfortable has a positive influence on maintaining the good psychological condition of people in isolation. This study can provide suggestions for the improvement of indoor environments and for the mental health of people in isolation and in other similar situations.

Alternate abstract:Growth in maritime transport, which is one of the most vital transportation sectors, naturally leads to establishment of new port areas. In last decade, many ports established in different regions of Turkey have taken an active role in sustainability and development of maritime transport, which has a larger share in the transportation of valuable goods on basis of tonnage, especially during coronavirus pandemic. Several ports in the Black Sea Region provide pilotage, tugboat and mooring services, discharge of waste and garbage, supply of fresh water and electricity. Filyos Port, moreover, will be able to provide port services in many areas with its physical and locational advantages and will make a significant contribution to meeting increasing transportation needs. Furthermore, natural gas reserves discovered in the region in recent years increase potential and importance of port. In this paper, ports in the Black Sea Region, dimensional features and provided port services are expressed on the basis of tugboats. Considering the global environmental perception, sustainability and efficiency in sea vehicles, national and international regulations and tugboats built in recent years, evaluations are made about the propulsion systems of tugboats that will serve in this port area in the future.

RESUMO

Public green and open spaces fulfil various social, ecological, economic, and aesthetic roles, which can be complementary while also competing with one another. The COVID-19 pandemic catalysed multiple societal changes, including citizens' perception, needs and expectations relating to urban green spaces. This article discusses the extent to which the temporally and geographically changed patterns of experiencing these natural spaces also influenced users' perception and behaviour as well as their appreciation of the conservation areas. The study is based upon two surveys carried out in the greater metropolitan region of Vienna, the capital city of Austria. A quantitative survey (representative online panel) among Viennese population (n = 1012), as well as qualitive interviews with experts responsible for conservation areas, administrators of federal parks, along with NGOs representatives were carried out in spring and summer 2021. Our study shows changed perception of urban citizens towards green spaces during the COVID-19 pandemic. An increased importance of time spent in nature (68%) and possibility to visit large green areas (67%) was reported by Viennese citizens. Also, higher recognition of green spaces located close to home was observed among 69% of the respondents. There were significant differences in opinions on green areas during the pandemic in various age and gender groups. Thus, the presented study contributes to the ongoing international discussion on the transition of societal needs and its effects on urban green spaces induced by the pandemic. Presented results highlight the need of urgent transformation towards a more sustainable, resilient and healthy urban space. Graphical abstract.

The article aims to analyze the impacts and reflections of the COVID-19 pandemic on plastic waste management. Theoretical Framework: The concern with COVID-19 resulted in several protective measures, such as the use of PPE and movement restrictions in urban centers. These changes also affected patterns of generation and management of solid waste, especially plastic waste, whose negative effects on socio-environmental aspects may emerge due to its inadequate disposal. Method: We conducted a systematic literature review in the databases Scopus, Sage and Web of Science, employing the Methodi Ordinatio. The review selected 22 studies to compose the research portfolio. Results and conclusion: The results showed a higher concentration of studies on plastic waste in coastal regions, especially from PPE and microplastic pollution. Moreover, there is a concern with the generation of packaging waste by shifting consumption patterns with the increased demand for e-commerce and delivery services. Besides an environmental concern, a long-term social problem stands out regarding the breaking of sustainable behavior patterns in using disposable plastic. Research implications: We propose solutions involving the use of biodegradable plastics, reuse of PPE, and new waste treatment technologies, besides changes in social behavior. Originality/Value: Overall, the study provides insights and promotes reflections on the challenges faced in managing plastic waste during the COVID-19 pandemic.

RESUMO

In societies where considerable sectors of the population are materialistic consumers, there is a noticeable phenomenon of the conflict between the consumers’ materialistic and green values. The unsustainable consumption behavior of consumers is still a major issue in consumer behavior and environmental science. The topic of value conflict has caused great interest among psychology researchers. However, the research investigating the causes of the consumers’ materialistic and green value conflict is sparse. Therefore, the aim of this semi-systematic literature study (n = 25) is to identify the causes of the materialistic and green value conflict from the perspective of consumer behavior. Content analysis reveals seven possible causes which may influence the green and materialistic value conflict: dissonant information, environmental beliefs, environmental concern, impulsive buying, consumer confusion, anti-consumption, and decision evaluation. The analysis shows a probable relation between environmental beliefs and environmental concern, as well as a relationship between environmental beliefs and anti-consumption. The current research yields insights into the phenomenon of consumers’ materialistic and green value conflict, with attention being paid to the under-researched causes of the conflict. In the light of materialistic inclinations and sustainable consumption, new forms of sustainability campaigns, such as showing the benefits of anti-consumption and simpler lifestyles for materialistic consumers, are presented for marketers and policymakers.

Alternate :While climate change is getting real in France and worldwide, environmental concern is still a forefront issue, even after two years of Covid-19 pandemic. Especially tangible, destructive and frightening, extreme climatic events strengthen the idea of climate emergency in the public opinion. As they are to occur more frequently and with an increased intensity, the extreme climatic events make necessary to know what new environmental risks produce on individuals and societies. Human and social sciences, and economics enlighten the multiples stakes of this question. Increased eco-anxiety, tensions and conflicts underline the necessity to face this situation in a collective way. The fact that everybody has to "do its part" should not hide the fact that climate emergency is also and even most of all a political and social one.

RESUMO

Objective Understanding the influencing factors of discarded masks disposed by residents in Dongguan City during the period of COVID-19 epidemic, so as to provide basis for avoiding the environmental pollution caused by discarded masks in the future. Methods Using random sampling way to make an Internet questionnaire survey among 1042 permanent residents in Dongguan city and using Probit regression model to analyze the current situation and influencing factors of disposing the discarded masks. Results The installation of disposal bins, residents’ environmental concern level and education level positively influenced the residents’ disposal behavior, while the residents’ age and total household size negatively influenced the residents’ willingness to dispose. These influencing factors are basically consistent with those derived from other scholars’ studies on residents’ willingness to dispose of household waste, it shows that residents do not treat the disposal of discarded masks differently from other household waste and ignore the potential environmental hazards of discarded masks. Conclusion In order to motivate residents to properly dispose of discarded masks, it is necessary to clarify and standardize the requirements for discarded mask disposal and increase publicity to enhance the public’s awareness of environmental concerns and hygiene. To avoid environmental problems such as microplastics brought by discarded masks, disposable masks should be replaced by reusable elastic respirators;the use of polypropylene in masks should be reduced;new mask materials should be developed.
